WHAT IS EMDR THERAPY?

EMDR Therapy stands for: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy. It is a research-backed psychotherapy for trauma and anxiety disorders. Its effects can reduce the emotional and physiological distress brought on by a trauma memory by guiding the client to focus briefly on the memory while simultaneously administering bilateral stimulation (BLS), typically using eye movements.

EMDR Therapy Frederick MD is based on the Adaptive Information Processing model which stipulates, that under times of serious distress, an individual’s brain blocks their ability to process or work through situations, therefore leaving them stuck in the past.

EMDR helps the processing of past traumatic events by enabling different parts of the brain to communicate more efficiently using bilateral stimulation (BLS). EMDR therapy Frederick MD allows for the traumatic memory to integrate within the positive memory network in the brain, allowing for the memory to no longer be traumatizing.

Before EMDR, an individual might experience hopelessness, anxiety, lack of emotional control, PTSD, or depression in connection with a traumatic event of the past. They might be experiencing triggers where they feel that they are stuck in the past. After EMDR, an individual can experience empowerment, resilience, reduction in overall anxiety symptoms, better emotional control in response to distressing situations, and overall improvement in quality of life.

What is EMDR NOT?

EMDR is not hypnotherapy. It will not erase the traumatic event from an individual’s memory. Rather, it will enable an individual to process the event and find resolution so that they are able to live in the present, not stuck in the past.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN A SESSION?

Whether the session is virtual or in person, I ensure the environment is safe and confidential.

In EMDR therapy Frederick MD, there is no homework required between sessions and removes the need to talk in detail about the trauma or distressing experience. Rather than focusing on changing thoughts, emotions, and behaviors which are causing distress, our certified EMDR therapists provides a natural healing process through the use of BLS.

EMDR’s main focus is to help the brain and body to resolve unprocessed traumatic memories and can do so in fewer sessions than other psychotherapies.
